TCS 23 Student Awards
A primary objective of The Coastal Society is to further the education, training and careers of students, including supporting opportunities for students to present emerging concepts and enrich the coastal community’s collective knowledge at TCS biennial conferences. At each TCS conference, student awards are given as a means of acknowledging the best student poster presentation and oral presentation. At the TCS 23 conference, which will be held June 3-6, 2012 in Miami, FL, three student awards will once again be presented: the Thomas E. Bigford Student Awards (for oral presentation and poster presentation) and the Sea Grant Association Award.
Thomas E. Bigford Awards
Award for Best Student Oral Presentation and Award for Best Student Poster Presentation
Award: $300 cash awards and plaques Eligibility: Presently matriculated graduate students and law students
Conditions: Students must make an oral or poster presentation, and abstract must be published in TCS 23 Proceedings.
Sea Grant Association Award
Award for Best Student Oral Presentation or Best Student Poster Presentation
Award: $300 cash award and plaque
Eligibility: Presently matriculated graduate students and law students presenting marine or Great Lakes research
Conditions: Student must make oral or poster presentation and abstract must be published in TCS 23 Proceedings. If research is Sea Grant funded, appropriate acknowledgment of that support is required.
Evaluation Criteria
- Originality / creativity of the research
- Quality / rigor of the research
- Contribution towards a broader understanding of a coastal issue
- Clarity / quality of the published abstract
- Quality of oral presentation of abstract
- Quality of communication of poster
Submission
Please contact TCS 23 Student Awards Committee Chair Paul Ticco at paul.ticco@noaa.gov, if you wish to wish to be considered for an award. Please include your name, affiliation, mailing address, phone number and fax number and name of your paper / abstract or poster. In addition, please supply a letter from your advisor stating that the work reported on is exclusively or largely that of the student's, and that it was performed while matriculated in a degree program. The deadline to contact Dr. Ticco that you wish to be considered for an award is Sunday, May 29, 2012 at 6 pm ET.
