Opening Plenary

40 Years of the Coastal Zone Management Act:
Impacts and Innovations
Forty years ago, Congress passed landmark legislation to
protect, restore, and enhance the nation’s coasts. The Coastal
Zone Management Act of 1972 created a unique partnership
of federal, state, and local governments and other stakeholders
to protect the nation’s coastal treasures. The 40th anniversary
of the Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) is an excellent
opportunity to highlight successes and call for innovations.
The Monday Opening Plenary will provide perspectives on
the impacts of state and local efforts in coastal management,
with an emphasis on innovations that are likely to be
instrumental in coastal management at the local, state, regional
and national levels over the next 40 years. Participants will
hear analysis, best management practices and proposed
innovations for coastal management including the application
of scientific knowledge and perspectives to coastal
management policy and practice. Ideas from the plenary will
contribute to a CZMA-themed Special Issue of the journal
Coastal Management.
