Green Initiatives
To follow the spirit of conference theme and to demonstrate how TCS is adapting to the future by conserving and protecting resources today, the Planning Committee is implementing many of the same Green Initiatives as before with an additional focus on supporting local businesses, organizations and initiatives:
- Maintaining a conference website to reduce distribution of printed materials;
- Utilizing a shared-access online abstract and paper submission;
- Relying on email and phone communications for planning activities and reference documents;
- Using an eco-font that utilizes 20% less ink when printed on most correspondence;
- Selecting lodging facilities that demonstrate environmentally sensitive practices;
- The Hyatt Regency Miami has shown national industry
leadership and commitment to protecting the environment
through its wide-ranging policies and practices
- The hotel’s Green Team is comprised of one representative
from each department: Communication, Water Conservation,Energy Efficiency, Waste Reduction, and Clean Air Practices
- Florida Green Lodging Designated Property
- Achieved 4 Green Key rating in 2010 through Green Key
Eco-Rating Program
- Arranging transportation to field trips for participants to travel as
a group through the use of vans or a bus;
- Providing earth friendly and useful conference items, and minimizing handouts and disposables, and encouraging reuse and recycling of materials;
- Putting the conference proceedings on the Internet rather than
on cd to save valuable resources and limit waste
- Donating excess food from the conference each day to Feeding
South Florida
- TCS is collaborating with Earth Givers to offset the carbon dioxide
emissions from the conference footprint through donations
towards their Revolving Tree Fund and Renter’s Initiative projects.
TCS 23 attendees are also able to offset their own emissions from
travel by using the carbon calculator embedded on the Earth Givers
website and making an individual donation.
