Scholarships
The Student Travel Scholarship Committee is accepting applications for student travel scholarships via email to Jack Wiggin through close of business on Monday, May 5.
To be eligible for a student travel scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- A presenter of a paper or poster at TCS21
- A current member of (national) TCS. If you are not a current member, you can become one by visiting Membership and clicking on “How to Join.” Student membership is $20.
- Enrolled as a student as of spring 2008
- Willing to help check badges for short periods during social events at TCS21, and attend the planned orientation at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 29 in Redondo Beach.
Applications should be a one- to two-page letter containing the following information:
- The title of your presentation at TCS21 and whether it is a paper or poster
- What you expect to gain from attending TCS21
- Your role in a TCS chapter, if any
- The school and department of which you are a part
- A summary of your expected travel costs (air or car transportation, hotel, and registration). See Registration for details on this cost.
- A description of other funding sources you have pursued, or are planning to pursue, and the outcome (level of funding)
The Committee will inform all students via email of their funding amount by or on Monday, May 12. Students will be required to accept or decline their scholarships via email by Friday, May 16. The committee expects that scholarships will most likely not cover all travel costs for any recipient. Therefore, students should pursue funding through their departments and universities, chapters, state Sea Grants, and other available sources. In addition, students should be aware that the travel funding will be handled as a reimbursement, so receipts will be required.
To be clear: this opportunity is distinct from the best paper/poster award for students. If you would like to be considered for a best paper/poster award and have not notified Program Chair Lisa Schiavinato about your interest, please email her. Those presenting work done while they were students are eligible for best paper/poster awards.
If you wish to be put in touch with other students attending the conference in order to find a roommate and reduce your costs, please email Christine Patrick and she will connect you.
