Conference
Location
St.
Pete Beach, Florida is an ideal location for The Coastal Society's
2006 meeting because it is a growing coastal community that exemplifies
innovative solutions to science, management and policy. Located
directly on the Gulf of Mexico on the western edge of the Tampa
Bay area, this thriving city is within a few short miles of the
2005 America's Best Beach Award-winning Ft. DeSoto Park with its
white sandy beaches and lush mangroves. With more than seven miles
of waterfront, visitors enjoy canoe and nature trails where the
area's native fauna and flora can be viewed, as well as world-class
fishing, camping and water sports. Also within minutes of St. Pete
Beach is the ferry to Shell Key Preserve, an undeveloped barrier
island that provides habitat extremely rare in Florida. Critical
to the survival of a number of wildlife species that depend on coastal
systems, this area demonstrates how integrated science and policy
can lead to sustainable public use and protection of sensitive environments.
The area is also home to highly regarded marine research programs
at the Florida Marine Research Institute, NOAA National Marine Fisheries,
the local United States Geological Survey, the University of South
Florida and Eckerd College. For those looking for excitement outside
Tampa Bay's nearly 400 square mile estuary, parks, museums and theaters
abound. The recently redeveloped downtown St. Petersburg offers
a variety of dining and shopping options, and beautiful sunsets
as seen from the St. Pete Pier. Busch Gardens, the Dali Museum and
the Museum of Science and Industry, to name a few, are all just
about 30 min away from the conference hotel. The Disney parks and
Sea World are only about 90 miles from St. Petersburg. Come see
for yourself why Gulf Coast beaches are the place to be!
