Communications Committee

Members

Work Plan
The Communications Committee provides TCS with a measure of consistency for all communication materials and activities including the Bulletin, the TCS brochure, TCS Press Releases and the TCS web site. The Communications Committee will provide technical support to all other TCS Committees, including the Communications Subcommittees, the Bulletin Editorial Board and the Web Site Development Team (Led by a Web Site Team Leader designated by the Communications Chair). The Chair of the Communications team will serve as the primary point of contact for all media and public relations issues of TCS.

Subcommittees
The Communications Committee is comprised of three subcommittees.  These Committees are freestanding committees and report only to the Chair of the Communications Committee as necessary.  The Communications Committee provides technical support to these committees as requested.

Bulletin Advisory Board
Chair: Editor (Ellen Gordon)

The Editor of the Bulletin serves as the liaison to the TCS Board.  Members of the Communications Team will assist with the solicitation of articles and other newsworthy items for the Bulletin.

Web Site Development Team
Chair: Laurie Jodice
Members: Helene Scalliet

The Team will develop a standard web site page.  The Team will draft policies for web site content and present them to the TCS Executive Board for approval.  The Team will develop a storyboard (lay-out) for web page content, gather the content and supporting information, organize the content and present it to the TCS Executive Committee for approval before uploading the pages. 

Publicity/Outreach Team
Chair: Ariel Cuschnir
Members: Gib Chase

Works with all committees to transfer information among committees where relevant. May wind up working with institutions to build collaborations on educational and outreach projects.

TCS Conferences
The Communications Committee will provide back-up support to the Conference Planning Committee on all communications issues.  The Communications Committee will assist with all media-related conference activities, e.g., press kits, pressroom, etc.

TCS Brochure
The Communications Committee will:

  • develop preliminary ideas for a new TCS Brochure;
  • present the ideas with cost estimates to the Board;
  • solicit designers for the brochure;
  • present designer credentials and printing options to the Board for approval;
  • work with the designer on the final product; 
  • work with the President and the Executive Director on a final distribution plan; and 
  • print and distribute the brochure.
Financial Prospectus
The Communications Committee will:
  • develop preliminary ideas for a new TCS Financial Prospectus;
  • present the ideas with cost estimates to the Board;
  • solicit designers for the financial prospectus;
  • present designer credentials and printing options to the Board for approval; 
  • work with the designer on the final product; 
  • work with the President and the Executive Director on a final distribution plan; and
  • print and distribute financial prospectus.
Membership Guide
The Communications Committee will work with the Membership Committee to provide support for the publication and distribution of a new membership guide.

Other Technology
The Communications Committee will investigate the use of other communications media for activities, like distance learning, list serves and teleconferencing, and provide recommendations to the TCS Board.

Education Committee

Work Plan
In order to carry out The Coastal Society’s goals of promoting professional education, and supporting and furthering the education of students and professionals, the Education Committee is responsible for a broad range of activities under "pre-professional education" and "continuing education". 

  1. Provide opportunities for student and practitioner  skills development, e.g., training in mediation, wetlands delineation, water quality monitoring, etc.;
  2. Mentoring, linking students and young practitioners to professionals (see student chapter proposal);
  3. Student Awards at Biennial TCS conferences;
  4. Support student travel at biennial TCS conferences by securing outside sources of funding;
  5. Host student showcase and/or training opportunities at CZ biennial conferences;
  6. Encourage networking and career opportunities for TCS members (e.g., through Internships and Fellowships feature in Bulletin, etc); and
  7. Look for creative ways of informing others about coastal issues; be prepared to be responsive to opportunities for partnerships.  
Furthermore, in order to work toward the mission of actively addressing emerging coastal issues, the Education Committee will work with others to address the need for an environmentally literate citizenry.

Finance Committee

Committee Charge
Prepare a biennial budget and operating plan for consideration by the board. When necessary, prepare a budget and operating plan adjustment for the second year of a biennial budget cycle.

Development Committee

Members: Gib Chase, Ariel Cushnir, Amy Blizzard, Kristen Fletcher

Identifies ways TCS can fund its future growth without sole reliance on conference surplus. Develop long-term financial strategy. Will develop templates and procedures for fund raising, and identify potential funding sources. Will oversee grant applications. Works with conference development subcommittee in the sponsorship process.

Membership Committee

Committee Charges

  1. Oversee the collection and summary of membership statistics
  2. Develop a plan for member recruitment and retention
  3. Oversee member services

The Challenge
The membership committee has been challenged to sign-on new members.  In conjunction with this, individual board members have volunteered to recruit a new members themselves.   

Chapters Committee

Committee Charge
The President has created an ad-hoc committee to address the following chapter needs and to take over certain chapter-related duties of the Membership Committee.

  1. Provide ongoing assistance to chapters (such as communications, regular calls with Committee and between chapters, etc.).
  2. Serve as a liaison between BOD and chapters.
  3. Provide guidance to chapters on activities and initiatives:
    • Ensure adherence to laws, regulations, and tax code affecting non-profit status.
    • Provide advice to chapter advisor and officers on operations and activities such as meeting logistics, membership, fundraising.
  4. Work with Communications Committee to promote chapters and their activities.
  5. Work with Chapters to give annual awards, manage competitions, etc.
  6. Provide guidance to chapters to hold relevant professional trainings or other meeting at TCS, CZ and other conferences.
  7. Manage the creation of new chapters following the procedures for affiliation including recruitment, development, drafting of new bylaws, adoption of chapter by BOD, and creation of relevant partnerships.

Special Projects Committee

Committee Charge
Take on new ideas and projects for TCS before they become a separate committee or finish the project. Example is a TCS conference before a planning committee and chair are appointed.
Items on the list now include: TCS21, off-conference year activities and the Coastal Resource Recovery Fundraiser

Nominating Committee

Committee Charge
Work with TCS Board and Executive Director to solicit and select a balanced slate of candidates representative of TCS demographics for election (officers and directors), following rotation of term proscribed in the TCS Bylaws

Influcation Working Group

Members: Bob Goodwin (Chair), Susan White, Laurie Jodice, Christine Patrick, Rick DeVoe

Description: Discuss, analyze and recommend guidelines for the BOD to consider when discussing its role in advocating, influencing, & evolving as a Society.

International Integration Working Group

Members: Ariel Cuschnir (Chair), Patrick Christie, Tali Engoltz, Larry Hildebrand, Patrick Lawrence (to invite)

Description: Discuss, analyze and recommend guidelines for the BOD to integrate international issues, topics, and opportunities into TCS activities, development, and conferences.

Strategic Planning Working Group

Members: Kristen Fletcher (Chair) , Jeff Benoit, Larry Hildebrand Description: Develop strategic plan for TCS.
