Measure for Measure: How Do We Gauge Coastal Stewardship?

  • How do we measure the coasts and their functions?

  • How do we assess impacts?

  • How should we fashion our coastal future?

Coastal areas and resources are dynamic. They shift and move over time. Over 300 joined us in Newport, Rhode Island, to examine contemporary coastal issues and the means by which they are measured. Plenary sessions, panel discussions, and workshops provided participants with opportunities to learn more about the wide range of tools and methods employed in coastal governance and stewardship.

The 18th International Conference of The Coastal Society, was held held May 19-22, 2002, in Galveston, Texas.

Converging Currents: Science, Culture and Policy at the Coast.

The Coastal Society's 2002 conference explored interrelationships among the physical, ecological, cultural, and political currents that converge at our Nation's coast. Operating at all scales of spatial resolution - local, regional, national, and international - these currents intermingle to form a rich tapestry of natural elements and human designs, each dependent on the other.

To examine these interrelationships, the conference had three sub-themes based on separate tiers of geographic resolution:

  • Coastal Watersheds and Estuaries - Exploring the Vital Link Between Land and Water.

  • Ecosystem Perspectives at the Regional Scale - The Gulf of Mexico Case Study.

  • National Treasures and the International Commons - Ocean Resources in the 21st Century.
